Cypriot olive bread

Recipe: Cypriot olive bread
By: Kiria Roula, Alexandroupolis but originally from Cyprus

Our neighbour in Greece, Kiria Roula, made this for us on our last visit in 2013.  So I took a photo and lost the recipe. So as she was giving Evangeline her 2 freshly laid eggs the other morning I asked if I could have it.  Lucky for me she was making a big batch the next day.  So armed with my trusty iPhone, pen and paper off I went 2 meters down the road.

Vine leaf saganaki with oxymelo

I'm pretty sure I saw a similar recipe in one of the Gourmet Traveller magazine's a few years ago. From memory it was an A la Greque recipe which used kefalograviera.  (which by the way I prefer)  I didn't write down the recipe as I never follow them but vividly remember the photo.  It was beautiful!

Foodie goodness on the road to Imvros ......

Delicious kourabiethes in Imvros

Imvros...our storyxxxx

As most of my friends saw on Facebook we spent a few days on Imvros last week.  Imvros which is now known as Gokceada in Turkish was one of two islands that were given to Turkey after the Treaty of Lausanne was drawn up in 1923.

Brining your own olives

About a month ago my Greek neighbour and I had an exchange of homegrown fruit.  She gave me a about 12 kilos of Prahran grown olives for a bag of Prahran grown lemons..Fair exchange I think!  I'm not sure what kind of olives these are but they are tiny!  I usually use jumbo Kalamata olives when I brine my olives.  There was no way that I was going to individually split these.  I have left them whole and they are sitting in the brine.  I will taste test when I get back from Greece!  If you get your hands on larger olives use the method below.

Quince Paste...the fast way

Quince season is officially over but you can still find them at the market.  They are a very versatile fruit that, in Greek cuisine since antiquity, have been used in both savoury and sweet dishes.

Chicken, leek and mushroom pies

My best friend and I had a cooking day this week.  We made very moorish chicken pies.  I was going to make the pastry but we had to squeeze in Evangeline's last maternal nurse appointment.  So Aldi it was for the shortcrust and puff pastry.  Perfect!!!

Pasteli - Sesame bars

Recipe: Pasteli
Recipe By: Kiria Andonia

Now this is the ultimate dessert which goes back to Ancient Greece.  It was even mentioned in Homer's Illiad.  The two basic ingredients are sesame seeds and honey.  In ancient times it was made with these two ingredients and sometimes dried fruit was added.  The mixture was rolled into a bitesized ball and served as a welcome treat at a wedding.

Magiritsa - Greek Easter Soup

Greek Easter is upon us and this means time to dye the eggs, make the koulourakia (Smyrneika of course!) and my all time favourite soup...Magiritsa.

Ricotta Cannoli

I don't have much of a sweet tooth but you would never guess it if you put certain items in front of me.   For instance ice-cream, galaktoboureko, kunefe and ricotta cannolis.
